TINY OFF-GRID HOUSE SINGLE-POLE & 3 WAY LIGHT SWITCHES
CODE, INSTALLATION & OPERATION
The Tiny Off-Grid House light switches will incorporate Leviton Lever Edge 15 Amps Rocker Switches, for the single-pole (Model # E5601-W) & 3-way switches (Model # E5603-W). The Lever Edge color coded terminals help prevents miswiring during installation.
A Code-Compliant Method of wiring a single-pole switch involves connecting a black (Hot) wire from the feed to the top black—brass—(Hot) switch terminal, while the bottom brass terminal is connected to an outgoing black (Hot) wire leading to the light (Load) fixture.
Inside the light switch box, the white (Neutral) wires are bonded together to continue to the light fixture (Load). According to the 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC) 404.2(c) “Switch Connectors”, a neutral wire is now required to accommodate new Smart light fixtures that need the neutral to help operate the device.
The green (Ground) wire will be connected to the green terminal and subsequently, to the metal switch box.
No switch box in the Tiny Off-Grid House will be wired in the traditional Switch Loop method which involves a black (Hot) feed wire connected to the switch while a white wire is re-identified as a hot wire leading to the light (Load) fixture. The Switch Loop inhibits the use of a white (Neutral) wire.
The light switches wires will be 12 AWG copper, however, the lights circuit breaker(s) in the main electrical panel amperage will be determined by the light switch manufacturer.
